Modifier Live

From its launch in 2022 until 2024, I led Modifier, the professional development and consulting practice of nonprofit newsroom Resolve Philly. In April 2024, we held an in-person conference called Modifier Live in Charlotte, North Carolina. I designed the programming for this two-day event, which featured a slate of interdisciplinary speakers.

Modifier: Consulting & Professional Development

In my time as Senior Director of Practice Change, I launched and led the consulting practice of Resolve Philly. Through workshops and direct coaching relationships, we worked with newsrooms to develop skills in collaboration, community engagement, workplace culture, source tracking, and more. This work impacted over 4,000 journalists at client organizations, including American Press Institute, Capital B, Delaware Journalism Collaborative, Dallas Free Press, Dallas Morning News, EducationNC, High Country News, Investigate West, MindSite News, The Narwhal, Outlier Media, The Philadelphia Inquirer, PublicSource, The Solutions Journalism Network, Spotlight PA, The Trace, WQED, and more.

How local news in Philadelphia covered the George Floyd protests

During the summer of 2020, I began analyzing the news coverage produced by 19 newsrooms in Philadelphia in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and subsequent protests. The result was an in-depth research report that included content analysis of headlines and photos as well as the sourcing of hundreds of stories.

2020 COVID-19 Reporting Guide

In April 2020, I wrote and published a guide for reporters summarizing best practices in framing and style guidance as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. It was quickly shared by several industry newsletters and referenced by countless reporters during these early days.
